Foreign Object in Eyes

Foreign Bodies in the Eye from Butler Eye Care

At Butler Eye Care, we are proud to provide acute care services to the individuals who come to see us. One of the most common problems people have with their eyes is that a foreign body gets lodged in them. When this happens, this can be a serious issue. It can even threaten someone's vision as a whole. We are here to make sure that everyone in the local Lebanon area has access to an optometrist who can perform a detailed exam and remove the foreign body safely.

Common Foreign Bodies Lodged in the Eye

At Butler Eye Care, there are a few common foreign bodies that we see lodged in the eyes of our patients on a regular basis. Some of the most common include:

  • Woodchip: Many people end up with a woodchip or a splinter in the eye as a result of working outside in the yard. This is why people need to make sure they wear proper eye protection when they are working outside.
  • Metal Shards: Anyone who works in the welding industry knows just how serious this can be. It is important for people to make sure they protect their eyes when they are working with hot metal. This can be a serious issue.
  • Plastic: If someone snaps off a piece of plastic, it may fly through the air and land in someone's eyes.

These are a few of the most common foreign objects that people often end up having lodged in their eyes. Once we have identified it, the next step is to remove it.

How an Eye Doctor Removes a Foreign Body

If someone comes to see us with a foreign body, our next step is to remove it. We will typically use a specialized dye that shows up underneath a blacklight to make sure there isn't damage to the cornea. Then, we will evert the eyelid (as this is where the object usually hides) and remove it with a set of tweezers. If necessary, we can also numb the eye during the removal process; however, we don't want people to scratch their eyes accidentally once the procedure is done. Count on us to help you!
