What To Expect During An Eye Exam?

What to Expect during an Eye Exam with Our Optometrist

If you’ve never had an eye exam or haven’t had one, you might feel a little nervous about what goes on. This guide from our team at Butler Eyecare in Lebanon, MO, outlines the basics of an optometry exam, so you can feel more confident and informed.

General Information

Your optometry specialist will gather some basic information from you, including your medical history and whether you are experiencing vision problems. It might seem strange that they ask for medical history, but there’s a very important reason.

Some health issues are related to your eye health. By understanding your current or potential medical problems, your optometrist will know better what to screen for.

Testing

The most well-known vision test involves reading letters from a chart to determine visual acuity. This is part of the exam, but several other tests take place. These typically include a color sensitivity test, glaucoma test, refraction test, and a test of your peripheral vision. In addition, if your optometrist detects potential issues, additional testing might occur.

Diagnosis

The tests mentioned above will let your optometrist know if you need corrective lenses. If so, you’ll be asked to look through various lenses to determine your vision prescription. The eye doctor will talk to you about eyeglasses, contacts, and other available options.

Most eye doctors have frames on site that you can choose from if eyeglasses are the route you decide to go. After choosing your frames, your eyeglasses will be ordered.

If you show eye health issues, like glaucoma symptoms, your optometry specialist will walk you through treatment recommendations. They will also provide information on how often you should visit, as some people need more frequent eye exams than others.
